Acceptance
By using howmanytokens.io ("the Site"), you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Site.
What the Site does
The Site provides a free token-counter and cost-estimation tool for AI language models. It is provided as-is, without warranty.
Accuracy disclaimer
Token counts and pricing are best-effort:
- Token counts are exact for OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models (using each provider's official tokenizer or API). Counts for open-source models (Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen) are approximations within roughly ±3% of the reference tokenizer, labeled accordingly in the UI.
- Pricing data is manually snapshot from each provider's published rate cards. The "Pricing as of" date in the UI reflects the last update. Prices change without notice; verify against the provider's current pricing page before relying on cost estimates for billing or contract decisions.
- Cost estimates are projections, not invoices. Actual costs depend on your real usage, prompt caching, batch discounts, volume tiers, and any provider-specific billing rules not modeled here.
You assume all responsibility for verifying accuracy before relying on this Site for procurement, budgeting, or operational decisions.
Acceptable use
Do not:
- Submit content that is illegal, infringing, or harmful.
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse-engineer, or probe the Site or its underlying infrastructure beyond legitimate use.
- Submit secrets, credentials, personally identifiable information about third parties, or content covered by attorney-client privilege or similar protections — the prompt is sent to third-party tokenization APIs (Anthropic, Google) for the rows you enable.
- Use automated scraping or high-frequency requests against any endpoint. Rate limits are enforced.
API key handling (future Pro tier)
When the bring-your-own-key (BYOK) Pro tier ships, you may paste your own provider API key into the browser. Your key is held in browser memory only, never logged, never stored. By using BYOK, you accept responsibility for any usage and charges that result on your account.
Third-party services
The Site uses Cloudflare for hosting and analytics, sends prompt data to Anthropic and Google for tokenization (for the rows you enable), and may display advertisements served by Google AdSense and other ad networks. See the Privacy Policy for details.
No warranty
The Site is provided "as-is" and "as-available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event shall the Site or its operator be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from or related to your use of the Site, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
Changes
These Terms may change. Material changes will update the date below.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
